From Picture to Story - Illustration Workshop
Imagine you’re holding a blank sheet of paper in your hand—or a screen still waiting for the first stroke. Suddenly, a scene pops into your mind’s eye: a mysterious forest, a city in the clouds, or a creature that doesn’t exist in reality. But how does this fleeting image in your mind become a whole story? In this workshop, you’ll experience how illustrations aren’t just pictures—they open doors to whole worlds. You’ll evoke moods through colors or let lines convey emotions.
You’ll also discover what happens when you bring your ideas together. Because then something completely new emerges—a story that no one could have invented on their own! Everyone contributes their own perspective: a sketch, a word, a color, an idea. Piece by piece, these puzzle pieces come together to form a world that we all create together.
You’ll be guided by illustrator Barbara Steinitz and author Martin Gries. The resulting picture book will be published on our website “1001 Languages” at bilingual-picturebooks.org and translated into many languages.
Who can participate:
- You can participate if you’re 12 years old or older and
- you don’t need any prior experience.
- But you should be eager to make up stories and create pictures.
- Participation in the workshop is free.
The workshop will take place from October 19–23, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. each day.
You should try to attend every day if possible. If you can’t make it on a particular day but would still like to participate, please send us an email.
On Friday, October 23, at 5:30 p.m., there will be a joint closing reading.
